portraits
My obsession with groups and their collective and individual identity has fortunately been interrupted by a series of single portraits of people whom I encountered, rather than sought in my serial logic. Gorbachev asked me to take a single photograph of Daniel Spoerri. I was familiar with his garden and when I met him I asked him to enter his work of La Chambre de Rue Carcassonne for a portrait. Other friends have spent hours in my studio and every now and then, very rarely, have posed for a portrait. Of these, I have a very vivid memory of the evening that I photographed Graciela Iturbide.
