This new edition features an insightful dialogue between Bill Sherman (Director of the Warburg Institute) and Marco Delogu, tracing the thematic and historical links that resonate throughout the history of portraiture.
Five masterpieces by Antonello da Messina are investigated by Marco Delogu and transfigured into a photographic encounter that spans centuries and disciplines. The project develops a “play of gazes” on four levels: the subject, the painter, the photographer, and the observer. These “re-portraits” are accompanied by six photographs that amplify the dialogue between past and present. Five unpublished texts offer glimpses into the stories of the sitters.
“Anyone who decides to make portraits always has the works of the great masters in mind… the game was simple: comparing portraits made at the end of the last century with the masterpieces of Antonello da Messina. How much of my portraiture was ‘based’ on Antonello’s classics? Consciously none, but then the unconscious prevails and things you don’t expect come out.”

La nuova edizione presenta un dialogo tra Bill Sherman (direttore del Warburg Institute) e Marco Delogu, un confronto che ripercorre i legami tematici e storici che risuonano nella storia del ritratto.
Cinque capolavori di Antonello vengono indagati da Marco Delogu e trasfigurati in un incontro fotografico inaspettato. Il progetto sviluppa un gioco di sguardi su quattro livelli: il soggetto, il pittore, il fotografo e l’osservatore. A questi “ri-ritratti” si affiancano sei fotografie che amplificano il dialogo tra passato e presente. Cinque testi inediti offrono scorci sulle storie dei soggetti ritratti.
A chi decide di fare ritratti passano sempre in testa i lavori dei grandi maestri… il gioco è stato semplice: confrontare dei ritratti realizzati alla fine del secolo scorso con i capolavori di Antonello da Messina. Quanti lavori della mia ritrattistica sono stati ‘basati’ su Antonello? Consciamente nessuno ma poi l’inconscio prevale.
